This is mostly a sanctuary hostel for the homeless NOT a boutique, romantic tourist hotel and it should not be allowed to claim to be anything else, especially at prices ranging to $700 a NIGHT on a long weekend. We arrived WITH OUR CHILDREN at 2:30 in the afternoon & saw people smoking and loitering outside, open bottles of liquor being consumed & 2 people escorted off the property by security within a 30-minute period. This was an unsafe and volatile setting even mid-afternoon, and people should be clearly aware of the situation they are walking into. We initially did not want to make assumptions about the clientele and stupidly went through the check-In process. The parking garage smelled like urine and BO. By the time we got through the threshold of the very basic room & and were able to assess the entire situation, who was staying there and wandering around the hallways, the lobby and the front steps, we wanted out with our children. I can’t imagine what 2:30 in the morning would’ve been like. We were not comfortable, and the extra locks and waiver confirming we would not be excessively noisy did nothing to assuage our safety concerns. The Manager refused to cancel that night where we were paying $700+!!!! despite our pointing out their website does not disclose this important information. We booked a “premier” room that was supposed to come with a bottle of wine - wine that we didn’t receive and now seems like a ridiculous joke as no one would stay at this place for a romantic getaway or hold any event or banquet there. If this private owner wants to focus on government contracts to house people in need of housing, great. But do not expect people to pay exorbitant nightly tourism dollars without disclosing the nature of the business and what to expect from their choice. This is deceptive to say the least. From their website, we expected a small, boutique experience, not people hanging out everywhere drinking openly and arguing with security. On top of it, when we spoke with the manager, we got clear implications that we were somehow horrible people for not wanting to spend our summer long weekend holiday with our kids in this environment. Nor would the general manager even return our call. We acknowledge that we did not cancel within 24 hours, but they clearly did not disclose nor represent their hotel as it really is. We feel we were totally duped and severely overcharged. They offered $200 off and a free night’s stay if we ever came back - the free night was ridiculous considering we wanted out within 15 minutes of arriving. Paying even $500 for this place is outrageous, long weekend or not. Thankfully, the Delta was able to accommodate us last minute - and for less. It was a pleasure to stay there from the moment we entered as opposed to the entire surreal experience at Hotel Espresso, which nearly ruined our entire trip to Montreal.

We stayed a couple of nights pre-cruise to acclimatise and enjoy Montreal in the early Summer. We had a pleasant stay, very personable staff and a decent room. Novotel fittings seem to lean toward minimalist scandi which can give an air of being sp****, but bedding was very comfortable. Additional pillows appeared on request. Breakfast was interesting, again possibly post-covid staffing issues as things took a while but the staff were again very engaging. Great location on Rue de la Montagne with easy access to public transit and taxis to the port. Definitely would stay here again.
