Our first time in Zanzibar and this was the hotel we chose for our 11 night holiday. We had zero regrets!! The hotel was lovely and very traditional looking - we loved this, compared with a big commercial hotel. Beautiful views of the Indian Ocean!!! First impressions: - Staff were very welcoming & friendly, Advised us that check-in is 3pm (we arrived approx 11:30am) but our All-Inclusive begins immediately so we could go eat & chill around the resort until we had a room sorted. We didn’t have to wait too long as our room was ready at 12:30ish. Whilst we were waiting, we were shown to the showers & changing rooms which was great after a long time travelling. - Hotel was very clean & there was rarely a cleaner out of sight. The public toilet areas were always clean & well presented. - Our room was a bungalow on the beach front …… AMAZING!!! - The hotel was busy but you wouldn’t know through the day, only at meal times. It was fabulous for us as we wanted a chilled out and relaxed break. Spa: OMG what can i say - this place was a godsend. Whilst we were at the resort we had 6 treatments between me and my partner. 2 x Full Back Massages each and on our last night we booked a Hamman Spa treatment. The staff were fantastic!!! Would highly recommend booking a treatment with the team if you stay at the hotel! After our first massage both me & my partner had the best nights sleep ever!!! Trips: We used the onsite trip company Crab and Lobster. Amir was fab in helping us make the best of our stay in Zanzibar. All staff were amazing - very friendly and helpful no matter the questions or requests we had. Some special mentions to highlight: Buffet restaurant Manager: Alvin - thank you for looking after us daily 😊, Buffet restaurant waiter - Daniel “Mr Chelsea” - thank you for serving us so proudly and having football conversations with Gavin every time you served us! 🙂. Monica & Alos in the jetty bar - you were fabulous and made the days pass whilst we were laid down at the jetty.

We had a week long stay at this hotel following a week safari In Kenya, we arrived at the hotel late evening and the first 10 minutes unfortunately set the tone for the trip. We were greeted by a lady in reception, who checked us in and ran through the format of the hotel. We were all inclusive and the main points she proceeded to tell us about was all the extra charges that we could incur outside our all inclusive package. The hotel has a lobster bar, which we were led to believe was included in our all inclusive package. We were informed that this was closed, when asked why, she provided no reason. This was a big selling point for us in booking this hotel as we both love sea food. We were then told that if prawns and lobster were on the a la cart lunch menu we would have to pay extra for this. Due to our late arrival the buffet had closed, she then told us that sandwiches would be sent to our room, a gesture which she did not follow through on. I did ask her about this the next day and she replied saying that she thought we would have been asleep. We stayed in the jungle garden room, which was basic but definitely not 5*, the bed was very hard and the room liked tired. We woke up the next day and had to ask for a tour around the hotel, a little thing, but perhaps something you would expect to be offered being a 5* hotel. We spent most of our time on the beach, which was very nice and idyllic. However, many of the sun beds are broken, with the cushions and beach towels stained. Throughout the day I did expect someone to come and offer drinks or at least collect empty glasses, but this never happened. We spent one afternoon by the pool, simply because the beach setting was much nicer and the sea was so clear and warm. Our main disappointment was the food- there was plenty on offer at the breakfast and at the evening buffet, however the major concern I had was food being left on the side in 30 degree heat, for a couple of hours. The restaurant was open and there was no way of chilling the cold food, so the fruit and salad never looked very appetising. One morning, as authentic as it might be, I did spot a monkey on the buffet worktop, which isn’t the most hygienic of sights. Most days we had a freshly made pancake/omelet for breakfast, then a slice of freshly made pizza in the evening, we didn’t fancy anything else. Lunch was freshly made, but very basic and pretty bland- I wouldn’t say a pizza, burger and chips and a pasta dish is particularly a la cart. The food in general was not of a 5* standard and for us was a major disappointment. If you are a foody, looking for luxury, exemplary service and a hotel with a fun and welcoming atmosphere this is not the place for you. We would not recommend.

Karafuu Beach Resort & Spa

My fiancé and I visited Karafuu over New Year - a trip that we had planned in March 2023 already. After numerous emails with hotel management, we were pleased upon our arrival to see that all requests had been attended to. Our room was beautiful- sitting on the cliffs with a very clear view of the ocean. The staff were all very friendly and the overall hygiene was impressive. However, it was downhill from there. Our aircon in the room did not work the first night - and as we only arrived at 2am, we were desperate for much-needed sleep which was impossible in the heat and humidity. We complained to management the next day and they sent maintenance to our room to inspect - the answer they gave us was that there was a voltage issue all over Zanzibar and that their generator was not able to meet the requirements 24/7. We asked them to please just keep the generator on during the night as that was when everyone would be in their rooms - but our request fell on deaf ears as we did not sleep yet again. This carried on for another 3 days whereby maintenance kept being sent to our room even though they could not fix the issue. We were highly annoyed as Karafuu is supposedly a 5-Star hotel - but without aircon! My fiancé and I eventually resorted to sleeping outside on the patio with make-shift beds. Really not on!! Luckily it wasn’t mosquito season but we were utterly disgusted about this situation. You cannot not have aircon when you are a 5-star beach resort with >30 degrees Celsius heat and 90% humidity every day! As for the food…. we were expecting fresh seafood every day but were very disappointed with what we were given. None of the seafood was fresh - in fact it smelt so bad that neither my fiancé or I even wanted to eat it. I decided to give it a try on two nights and both times regretted my decision. We both had upset tummies every single day - most likely due to the very poor refrigeration of all the food. On New Year’s Eve, the people sitting next to us threw up due to the rotten shellfish that was served at the buffet - and we had to pay $80 supplement per person! My fiancé ended up having 2 pieces of pineapple for dinner - the most expensive meal we have ever paid for. We chose to do the half board option instead of all-inclusive and just as well because the all-inclusive drink list was so limited that most people had to spend additional money anyway so that they could have what they wanted. All in all, we enjoyed the pool, beach and people but won’t be rushing back to Karafuu. You really need to up your game with basic amenities such as aircon, as well as your food - otherwise you might be down rated to a 3-star hotel in the near future.
