When it comes to thinking of places to visit in Belgium, the town of Aalter in East Flanders, probably isn't the first place to spring to mind. Granted it doesn't have the charm of the Belgian coast, or the bustling hubbub of the larger, more tourist-oriented attractions, but its central location halfway between the cities of Gent and Brugge make it an great place from which to explore. The 4-star Best Western Hotel Orchidee in the center of Aalter provides an ideal base where you can plan your explorations. Aalter train station is a 15 minute walk away, and from there you can catch one of the regular trains to Gent or Brugge, with either journey taking half an hour. Alternatively, as the E40 motorway is just a few hundred meters from the hotel, both cities are accessible by car in around 20 minutes. I stayed at Hotel Orchidee for 3 nights just after Easter, 2022. The earliest check in is 2pm, and so this was the time I designated upon booking. (A word of caution for those hoping for a late check in. The reception desk closes at 11pm.) I arrived at the hotel at 2:05pm and was greeted by Piet, the hotel manager, who told me that my room would be ready in 10 minutes. There are several facets that I would expect from front of house staff - especially the manager - of a 4-star hotel. One of these is that they should be well groomed, besuited preferably, but nevertheless tidy in appearance. After all, they represent the hotel, a guest's first impression of what they might expect; and as the saying goes ”You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.” My first impression of Piet was that he was someone for whom sartorial elegance was not a phrase he was familiar with, with one too many buttons open on his creased shirt and apparent indecision on whether said shirt should be tucked in his trousers or not. Still he was amiable enough and pointed to the spacious, well-appointed bar off to the right of reception, where I could wait for my room. Whilst waiting, in addition to noting that the bar staff were better attired than the manager, I had time to peruse the menu, and discovered that a hungry guest could choose from crisps, nuts, a plate of cheese and salami, or a Croque Monsieur. Not exactly what I would expect from a 4-star hotel kitchen. I would later discover that the reason for this limited dining experience is due to the fact that the hotel does not employ a chef. Piet the manager is apparently chief, cook, and bottle washer, which probably explains why room service is not offered. My room was on the second floor overlooking the car park (which incidentally provides free parking, except on Saturdays when the Farmers Market is held), and no fewer than six bottle banks that are almost constantly in use throughout the day. El hotel está situado junto al antiguo castillo. Esta cerca de todas las atracciones. El hotel está muy limpio e insonorizado. Tiene un buen baño y un baño. La desventaja es que aunque hay un ascensor hasta el piso, es necesario llegar al piso. Llevar el equipaje y caminar unas escaleras, un diseño un poco extraño, y por eso, accidentalmente me caí al aire y me lastimé el pie.

Great hotel in a great location, the best way to travel in Belgium is by train, this hotel is a 300 meter walk from the main train station, the road down to the centre of town is lined with nice restaurants and cafes and a very pleasant walk, alternatively there is a Tram right outside the door. We had a small problem with one of our friends and the hotel went out of their way to help us out, they also have a great breakfast room on the 6th floor with views out over the city. The Hotel staff are also very good, making sure you have what you need in your room.

Comodísima habitación; tanto que nos olvidábamos de levantarnos. Buena insonorización -llegamos para el ultimo fin de semana de un sonoro festival musical de verano, no precisamente de Mozart, y la habitación aguantaba el estruendo de los escenarios callejeros. Habitación muy amplia, con un cómodo escritorio y hasta una sala de estar. La internet corre bien y es gratis, sin más trámite. El edificio es formidable: un ancien correo del siglo XIX de estilo neogótico, reciclado, en el centro turístico de Gante. Sus pasillos pintados de negro son una una audacia humorística: usted puede ser un vampiro o su víctima. Los pasillos tienen ventanas y las vistas son atractivas. Durante el día, ningún vampiro lo atacará. La toilette -digamos: la ducha y el aseo- está en un píso superior. 21 escalones arriba de una escalera helicoidal hecha de hierro. Allí falló el arquitecto. Hay un zócalo de acceso con el que tropecé los 5 días de hospedaje y una viga de hierro (estructural) con la que me golpeé la cabeza indefectiblemente. (Y no soy taaaan alto).Incluso me resbalé en los últimos tres escalones. Tal vez alguna silicona antideslizante y una lamparita al nivel del zócalo resolverían parte del problema. El retrete, por suerte, está en el piso bajo. Son los únicos e irremediables defectos. Todo el resto es fantástico. El personal es amable y -diría- hasta muy simpático. (Son flamencos, no olviden.) Pero... nos toco llegar al atardecer, durante el populoso festival. La puerta principal de acceso al hotel estaba clausurada y tapiada. Había otra entrada, inhallable. Cuatro veces dimos la vuelta manzana. Y , como la planta baja del edifico incluye un supermercado, nos la pasamos yendo y viniendo. Y subiendo la escalinata que llevaba al supermercado, que en ese momento funcionaba de platea de un show. a la cuarta vez, ya cuando parecíamos performers dedicados a molestar al público (tuve un incidente con una mujer) un colombiano muerto de risa me dijo: ¿y por qué no llamas al hotel? Eso hice. El recepcionista me orientó bien. Encontré la puerta, que era como la puerta de la plataforma 7 1/2 de Harry Potter. Nadie bajó a abrirnos. El recepcionista estaba sólo, en el primer piso. Por el precio del hotel, nos merecemos un maletero. ( y me shorro contarle la entrada por la puerta principal), Aun así, el hotel es excelente.

Arrivamos al hotel con mi Sra. Y no fue la mejor experiencia. Habíamos reservado una habitación deluxe con Balcón y nos dieron una habitación Standard. Algo pésimo para haber pagado 300 dólares la noche. Bajamos a recepción y le consultamos a la chica si esa era la habitación que habíamos reservado ya que no coincidía con la foto y nos dijo que el hotel estaba lleno y que esa habitación era la correcta. No nos gustó nada el trato. Luego de descansar un rato salimos a dar una vuelta y al regreso había otra persona en recepción y nos quejamos nuevamente por la habitación asignada. Le mostré al Sr de recepción la foto y este enseguida busco solucionar el tema. Rápidamente nos encontró una Suite ( es decir nos dio un upgrade), lo que cambió totalmente el panorama nuestro sobre el hotel. Pagar 300 dólares para recibir una habitación standard no molestaba muchísimo. Pero bien, tuvimos la suerte de encontrar luego alguien que se preocupo por el cliente y nos dio una excelente solución. El hotel está a 4 cuadras de la ciudad antigua de Gante. Edificio señorial con buena ropa blanca. Tienen la diferencia de incluirte lo que estaba en el mini bar. Desayuno bueno, aunque si llegas tarde puede que se queden sin alguna cosa. Es una buena opción en Gante

El hotel es un hotel muy acogedor, muy acogedor y muy acogedor, y es un hotel muy acogedor y muy acogedor. La que tenía era muy grande, con una cocina totalmente equipada y un enorme baño. El control perfecto de la temperatura en el interior de la habitación, no hay riesgo de sentirse demasiado frío o demasiado caliente. Las camas grandes y muy cómodas. La habitación está muy bien limpia, pero también en las zonas públicas. Es difícil encontrar algo que pueda ”menos” mi evaluación y no he encontrado nada.

Nos alojamos unos compañeros de trabajo y yo durante unos días y la experiencia fue increíble. Solo utilizamos el buffet desayuno, el cual era increíble. La habitación era muy amplia y el baño también.

I had a very bad experience with this hostel, I arrived and it was imediately clear that they are not focused at all on having a clean space. They gave me sheets to make my own bed and the sheets had stains on them, as well as the covers in the bedroom, which did not seem clean at all. The location is excellent but minimum requirements in terms of cleaning are not met. Furthermore, there is at least one floor with no bathroom, which means you need to change floors if you ever want to go to the toilet. I do not recommend it at all. I ended up checking out on the same day of check in and went to another place (basically, paid twice for accomodation). When I explained the situation and asked for a refund I received a reply stating that they stand by the quality of their product, which is a bit shocking considering I sent a photo of the dirty sheets and did not even receive an apology.
