Great central location, a once grand hotel now slightly faded. We arrived by car and we were glad we could park by the hotel (the hotel has a few parking spaces for guests in the square next to the hotel). We visited as a family of four and booked a room for the four of us described as a deluxe family suite. It was effectively two standard double rooms which adjoined; one had a bathroom off the bedroom and the other had the entrance and a toilet. The beds were fine. The furniture was ok. There was an air conditioning unit in one of the rooms, and it was quite noisy and not very effective, so that was ok but could have been better. The bathroom had a small bath with a shower attachment, so no option to stand and shower. The water that ran from the bath taps was a slightly yellow colour. The room key was an old fashioned plastic card which you inserted into the door - we were careful with where we put the key, but every day one key would stop working and we would have to go the desk to ask for a new one. The corridors were quite dark, with a faded carpet monogrammed for the hotel throughout. The hotel reception area was nice and had some seating that guests could use there. The pool and spa in the basement was accessible only by stairs: we went down in our swimming costumes and we were glad we did. We enjoyed using the pool and facilities but did not stay very long. The pool is small; it was built to have jacuzzi and hydrotherapy areas, but these did not seem to work, and if they had they would have dominated the pool. There were some lounger beds next to the pool and also a sauna and steam room. The gym was in a different area of the hotel altogether: down some stairs near reception: the gym was poor - one exercise bike that did not seem to have any tension; one running machine that abruptly stopped working altogether after ten minutes of use; and some weights. Breakfast was available in 3 slots: from 0730, from 0830 or from 0930. The selection of food was good, including some very nice pastries and some nice fruit. There were steps to enter the breakfast room, so perhaps not ideal for everyone. We also ate a meal in the restaurant at the front of the hotel - we were served by someone who seemed very subdued, not happy, but the food was very good. On the pedestrian street outside, there are lots of shops, cafes, restaurants and so many ice cream stalls. It is just a few steps to the main square and the Brukenthal Museum. I felt like this hotel could have been great with perhaps a little investment and some adjustments here and there. However, you can’t beat the location and it worked for us.
