Damascus Old Mill Inn

My Husband and I stayed at the Inn on Mother’s Day. I want to say that it was wonderful. Our room was clean the staff and I mean ALL the staff was so wonderful and friendly the Resturant dinner was so good. And we were so close to the riding trail. We were able to bring our bike into the room which was a great feature. The free breakfast was delicious and so much to choose from. I would suggest this to anyone needing a great place to stay and a great place to have your meals. The whole area of Damascus VA is great and every place we went people were so friendly and helpful. People were walking around and smiling and all were happy to be outside. Thanks again to all the staff at the Inn. I so enjoyed my self. Maureen

This was our first and last stay at the Damascus VA Old Mill. I really want this hotel and its employees to succeed, so I am writing this review/critique, hoping the manager/owner will pay attention. June 2022, my husband and I stayed 2 nights, with another couple/friends in a separate room. Each room total was $357.12. When we arrived hungry and hoping to get in before the restaurant closed at 4:00 (per their website), I couldn’t determine where the front door was. Finally I went up some steps to a porch and pulled on the LOCKED door. WHY? It was 3:30 p.m. in broad daylight. As I turned to walk away puzzled, a woman opened the door. She said they keep the doors locked all the time, and the restaurant had already closed at 3:00. I told her they should update the time on their website for accuracy. Our room (coincidentally handicap accessible) Fridge: A tiny dorm fridge sat on the floor, so I had to get on my knees. A person in a wheelchair would have had to stand on their head to access it. Access. Since the whole place is always on lockdown, we were given a single key (not two)… not to the front door…but to an inconvenient back door, which required dragging luggage up a long ramp and across an even longer deck. All the locked doors proved to be a total hassle throughout our stay. Very unwelcoming! Bathroom. Huge square footage, which would accommodate a wheelchair, but there was no horizontal space to set anything down, and no hooks. Only a sink, toilet, and shower (with fold-up bench). I dragged in a side table from the bedroom area so I could lay my clothes and toiletries. Bed. Described as a KING on the website, but no! It’s a queen, so we didn’t really get what we paid for. Mattress was like crusty bread around the edges and sloped to the center, so my hubs and I fought keep from rolling down into the center. Don’t be fooled by website photos of pretty headboards and bedspreads. People care more about a good night’s sleep on a decent mattress than anything else. Shower. First morning, the water was lukewarm and I froze to death until I hurried to grab my towel, which was inconveniently sitting on the toilet lid (since there was nowhere else to put it). Friends’ room Our 2 friends felt like they stayed in a closet; the room was TINY. The king bed took up so much floorspace, they had to shuffle around it to get to the teeny bathroom. The first night, the husband felt as if his lungs were not getting sufficient air. They discovered the next morning the air filter/humidifier had not been properly maintained and badly needed attention. Staff Even though they were civil, the staff were unapologetic about all the inconveniences. They had the “it is what it is” attitude. The biggest problem was that they were missing so many times when we needed something. Oftentimes, NO ONE was in the front lobby. I rang the bell and called out, but it was crickets. When we finally caught up with an employee, I felt as if I was a bother. Bikes They agreed

Danny is the best he helped me with whatever I needed the place is gorgeous clean and the included breakfast was great. The views are awesome nice place to sit on the deck outside and have a nice cold beer A++ will come back with the wife for a romantic weekend

My husband, daughter & I had the pleasure of staying 2 nights in the detached White House across from the inn. It was very clean & cozy. The staff from the inn keeper to the breakfast attendant were quite accommodating. The atmosphere was so quaint & inviting. We look forward to returning next year!

Loved the restaurant and bar within the property as it is next to a river and has outside seating. The ducks will keep you entertained, lol! Our room was very small and first room off the elevator. We heard plenty of late night conversations after hours. There was a noise machine available at the bedside and a very nice touch. I couldn’t get the tv to work for the life of me and didn’t call to the front desk to fix bc it was already very when I tried it. Our room had a bathroom with a toilet and shower but the sink and mirror was outside of the bathroom area. Tea and coffee options available in the room on a side table was a nice touch. Bed was comfortable. Room was clean.

We stayed 2 nights at the Old Mill Inn, and the History of the Inn made it as if stepping back into time...Here was an Inn that remained untouched with many past memories of railroad years...and souls that worked hard to create this Gem for guests to experience it all... CHASITY was there to warmly greet us, and give us our room keys, and information about the Inn services & history. Our room was beautifully decorated with King Size bed, marble bathroom with deep (Jacuzzi ) bathtub, ornate round stone sink, and small porch overlooking the flowing river and splashing waterfall filled with excited assorted colorful ducks. We met up with our friends to pick out which table, amongst the wooden dining areas that we could chose to eat. We settled for a one with a fantastic view of the waterfall, and we're quickly met by smiling NIKITA who took our drink order and appetizers. We ordered a plate of 3 dips and pita points, followed by entrees of pasta & steaks from nearby farm, all delicious. RICHARD, the paino man, played spectacular music pieces, and the sun setting rays into the dining rooms was just magical.... We settled in early to get ready for our hike the next morning on the Creeper Trail. Sweet AMANDA had the breakfast room ready early the next am with fresh coffee, scrambled eggs, bagels and breads, fancy muffins, etc and the self service is very convenient. We then spent much time feeding the assorted ducks with the duck food they supplied us which was so much fun, and walked downtown to an Antique shop and other gift shops, which a small walk from the hotel and returned for our lunch. OLIVIA was another great attendant who served us a spectacular lunch of chicken salad sandwiches, fries tomato bacon burger, and blackened shrimp tacos...the food was awesome. After brief rest, we headed to Abingdon for dinner and a play. We all wanted the stay to go on. The old paintings of surrounding buildings and homes of Damascus that hang in the Old Mill make it seem you are in an old museum that is telling a story. and our experience was wonderful thanks to ERICA RAMEY, the guest manager, who helped me organize this special getaway for us...we will forever remember our time at the Old Mill Inn because, not only was it a beautiful historical find, but the whole staff so friendly and happy we were there... Don't miss this beautiful Gem in Damascus!!! J Watching out 4 U :)

Great little inn. Views were spectacular and even better having a restaurant and bar on-site. We checked in and dropped our bags and went right to the restaurant to have dinner and then to the bar for a couple after dinner drinks. Breakfast the next morning was great as well. Highly recommend staying here if coming to the area and will definitely be the place I will stay when I do come back.

Room 201 smells bad of water damage. They keep a dehumidifier in it for a reason. The room wasn’t stocked with sheets.

Erica went out of her way to take care of us, and we are beyond grateful. The entire staff was kind and professional! It's location is next to the river, and it is beautiful! I recommend that you do the Virginia Creeper and also take in a play or two at the Barter Theater in nearby Abingdon, VA where the acting is excellent! Ask for Erica, and she will take good care of you!
