Totem Square Hotel & Marina

Freshly renovated, clean, central to everything. Husband and I stayed here and we enjoyed our stay. We ate dinner at Beak Restaurant and went for a walk in the evening, then returned to our comfortable and clean hotel room right next to the water. Would recommend Totem Square Hotel to anyone.

I stayed for 5 nights at the beginning of August, and I was apprehensive about it after reading the previous reviews. This hotel is a good place to stay - it’s not the Hilton, but the staff was very helpful, even if short-staffed. Their airport shuttle picked me up from the airport at midnight and took me back at 4:45 am several days later. There is a simple breakfast (cereals, coffee, juice) from 5am - 9am. The hotel and rooms have been recently renovated; the rooms were very clean, and the bed was very comfortable. I was very pleased with my stay and wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. It’s also a very close walk to the Main Street with restaurants and shops and The Beak (a great little restaurant).

I was on a business trip and checked into the Totem Square Hotel and Marina for one night, I left to do some work for about 5 hours, and returned to find that someone had accessed my room and stole the Oculus II that I unpacked and was charging in my room while I was at work (I would later find that a Bluetooth speaker was also missing). I went to the front desk to complain and ask about the surveillance footage. The GM told me that they would have the night person look for the suspect in the footage and they would have to contact someone in Florida who could make decisions on next steps. The next morning there was no update or messages, the GM and Lead both recorded my contact info, and after a week ago today the hotel management has failed to contact me with any outreach, update, or confirmation on how the organization proposes to resolve the issue of my electronics being stolen from someone that they allowed access to rooms and who is jeopardizing the safety and security of their customers. I filed a police report and within a couple of hours the officer had video footage from the hotel of the suspect coming out of my room with a black bag. The office said that the suspect was a local resident and employed by the Totem Square Hotel and Marina. Totem Square Hotel and Marina (Management, Owners and Decision Makers) - when are you going to take action to resolve what has happened in your hotel, to a customer of yours by your employee, and someone that you have identified as being trustworthy?

If you think you can find a suite at the Four Seasons Sitka for $100 a night during the high season, by all means don't consider this property. It does seem expensive for what you're offered -- our room was cramped (i.e. small) and we walked to the Mean Queen for an actual breakfast. We heard from fellow travelers that were frustrated by the shuttle pick-up at the airport. However, we found the Totem Square to be absolutely fine. The shuttle picked us up at the airport on time (pre-arranged). Check-in was fast. Our room (while small) was clean (and obviously newly renovated). The hotel was happy to hold our bags on the day of check-out before we needed them. And the property's location is fantastic. I wouldn't want to stay in the room for a week, but for a night before embarkation, it was perfectly adequate. Our shuttle driver did admit that staffing shortages are straining their current staff. I think that it's safe to assume that's happening to similar properties in Sitka as well. Regardless, I'd try to keep perspective on where you are, and the Totem Square is good choice for a short visit to Sitka.

So disappointed! I read the terrible reviews from last summer (2021) and thought that their remodel project would change things. Unfortunately not. Our room, at over $300/night, was so cramped you couldn’t make it along side the beds. No desk; only one chair. Cramped and crowded. Their advertised continental breakfast was beyond pathetic!!! Offered items were bread and peanut butter, a box of Cheerios, orange and watery apple juice. The person monitoring the room brought out a bag of bagels to add to the brown and white bread choices and while she was loading, she dropped one on the floor, promptly picked it up and added it to the case! Unbelievable! Our final complaint was that they have a poor and unadvertised system of not letting you check in until 3:00pm. So if your flight or boat arrives anytime before then you just have to wait with all the other guests. We won’t be staying again. There are other hotels in Sitka to consider.

Oh my, where to start ? Waded thru a line out the door of the office only to be told our reservation did not exist. Ok, maybe you could help ? No, not at all. The wait to register was 1 hour plus, desk has 2 computers, three clerks, but only one trying to check people in. The working clerk was constantly interrupted by the “desk manager” directing her attention elsewhere. Each check in took about 15-20 minutes as a result. The manager then told us to wade thru the line in “about an hour” and she would “try” to help us then, but she had to “try and “clean this up”, meaning move the out the door line. But did she use the other computer, no, of course not. So I booked a room at the hotel across the street, returned to tell her and ask if she could shuttle myself and my wife and our baggage across the square. No, she was the “only one who could drive “and she had to stand behind the clerk and offer comments and couldn’t leave until she “cleared this out” Meanwhile most of the people persistent enough to make it to the desk were being told that they had 2 rooms instead of the 3 they reserved, or a variation of why they were wrong. The supervisor did then tell us she could drive the van across the square with my wife and our luggage, again “maybe in an hour after I clear this out”. The transport would have taken 5 minutes and her absence would only have helped speed the process. So my wife and I lugged our bags across Totem square in the rain. As we left, the line remained out the door. If you are brave enough to try, I suggest daily calls to confirm your reservation for about a week before you arrive, and even then keep your fingers crossed and have an alternate plan in mind.

Unfortunately, this hotel has a bar right across the street and it is LOUD! I spent 4 sleepless nights, being woken up by yelling, bar patrons congregating in the parking lot to talk and music from cars. The hotel itself is clean, has a shuttle and an okay breakfast but not being able to sleep due to noise is an issue. They also do not provide housekeeping during the stay, so trash is full in a day which I don’t like. Wouldn’t recommend.
