The Black Hole

Nice quirky place to stay, had a lovely two night stay with my friend to do Christmas shopping. The room was lovely and clean...enjoyed the breakfast All the staff were friendly and welcoming.

Although the hotel does not have on site parking the multi story car park on Chisel street is a short walk to the hotel, and reasonably priced for 24 hours (£7.50). The hotel is sat at the top of a hill on a very unique plot adding to the quirkiness of it, with spiral stair cases leading up to the 'cells' There is an accessible room on the ground floor. Room was clean and spacious. Ours was on the main road, but no real issue with noise. No tea & coffee in the room, however the breakfast room was accessible 24 hours with access to tea and coffee. Full English breakfast was absolutely lovely, one of the best we have had. At breakfast we were also asked if we wanted our room serviced, which we didn't. The walk into Winchester town centre is not far and very pleasant walking by the river. There is a small rooftop terrace with a few seats, the view is definitely worth the trip to the top.

Great breakfast, cosy place, all rooms are cells, and you can take pints from the pub next door to the terrace for an evening gander at the cathedral.

While this hotel is very central for exploring Winchester, the bathroom facilities let it down. We were in the ground floor room (be warned a bit noisy from the road, the reception and the 'buffalo' above); and while I accept the bathroom had been designed to cater for disability access, it was awful! The sink was so tiny and had a glass shelf right above it... so to spit out toothpaste you needed extreme precision, or just spat on your own feet, and it was impossible to wash your face or shave at the sink. The walk-in shower simply flowed towards the bedroom, so that the whole bathroom was filled with water after just a quick shower, and we needed to use towels like sandbags to stop it flowing onto the bedroom carpet. SEE PHOTOS. The toilet seat rotated and the toiletries were a little meagre for x2 people sharing a room. Staff were very welcoming, and I liked to tea facilities in the dining area. Just please someone, re-fit that bathroom!

Great themed hotel. Excellent location, 5 minutes from the centre via a scenic river walk. The rooms were excellent, clean and comfortable. The breakfast were lovely - all freshly cooked with a great choice. We stayed two nights and took advantage of the adjoining pub (linked to the hotel) which had a great atmosphere and was very friendly. The hotel owner was extremely friendly and took time to chat, advise where to go, best walks etc. Would return to this hotel if visiting Winchester again.

Really quirky place with great pub next door. Helpful friendly staff and a great breakfast too! Loved the jail theme which continued to the mugs, bowls etc. Decent free coffee 24/7 was a nice touch
