Thymus Residence nei Sassi

Gorgeous hotel, slightly on the edge of town - 20 minutes walk to the main drag. Our Sassi room was huge and beautifully renovated, with lovely linens and towels. Sadly we had quite patchy service. One receptionist was delightful, but another was quite unpleasant and passive-aggressive. She seemed determined to score points and play various yawn-making power games. For example accused us of being late when our taxi arrived 20 minutes early, also acting insulted when I asked her if she would make up a separate bed for my daughter then complaining the next day that I hadn’t requested this in advance. There were other issues too. Why bother with such silliness when there are so many other hotels in town?

When I say my family and I were wowed by our short stay in Matera, there is no exaggeration or hyperbole in that statement. Part of the wow factor came from our 2-bedroom suite with our own personal CAVE POOL that we did not have nearly enough time to enjoy during our 17 hours in Matera. Big shout out to Bora, who greeted us upon arrival and promptly showed us to our room. Thank you, Bora, for your hospitality and for all of your helpfulness in navigating us to the parking garage, making dinner reservations, and ordering a taxi for us. We will never forget you. The room was very spacious with a loft above that had a king-sized bed and a bedroom below with two twin beds. There was a pull-out couch as well, so the room can accommodate more folks. There were two bathrooms (one with a shower) and a small food area with a fridge and snacks for purchase. The complimentary bottle of wine we were given was delicious and I regret not taking down the name. The downstairs pool area appears to have been part of a spa at some point. As you can imagine, this was a big hit with the kiddos, especially after a day of airplane travel. We were given robes and slippers, which was a nice touch. There were ants on the floor here and there but nothing too worrisome for us given it was only a one-night stay. I did try to make sure we didn’t leave any crumbs out.

This hotel is in a quiet area. We actually stayed in two different rooms because we changed our booking. They were very accomodating. Both rooms were lovely and comfortable. There's a delicious breakfast served each morning, and if you like, you can sit on the patio to eat it. Wonderful, helpful people work here -- Bora was especially helpful in getting a taxi to and from the dentist in town (one of us had a terrible toothache). When we left, we were given a gift of Matera's special bread.

Very friendly welcome. Nice property in the heart of Sassi, reachable by car. The breakfast was excellent. Thank you Guido for the present:the bread of Matera, so tasty and unique we appreciated so much. I do recommand Thymus to all looking for local charm and authenticity..

Hotel room is in a cave with all the modern amenities, very clean. Great breakfast with very attentive hosts. Very old town and location is excellent for walking to many attractions. Good restaurants nearby and took the host’s recommendation for a tour guide in a three wheeled vehicle that was worth the time and cost. Parking is very limited and was recommended to a garage that kept the car in a garage and drove back and forth to the hotel. On time and reasonable priced at 25 euros. The nighttime is spectacular with the town all lit up. Would recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at Thymus in Matera during our 18-day honeymoon in Italy. We loved our stay so much we wished we could've stayed longer. About our room: We booked the suite with the hot tub, and it was so spacious. It had everything we needed, including snacks and water for purchase. The area with the hot tub even had candles ready for a romantic night. The suite was located in a cave (grotta) that was equipped with HVAC to ensure the humidity stayed low in our suite. About the service staff: I can't overstate how accommodating and welcoming the staff treated us during our short stay. I can recall the name of the lady who helped us (she did mention she was originally from Albania), but she was so nice and gave us a tour of our room and even had a bottle of white wine (a gift from the hotel) chilled in the fridge for us. She also gave us recommendations for places to visit in Matera, booked our dinner reservations, and helped us book a taxi. There were a couple of other people that we interacted with who were also very nice and helpful. I believe they might have been the owners. During our checkout, we received a gift with local bread from the owners :). About the ammenities we used: The breakfast that was included with our stay was delicious. My husband loved the apple cake. I loved everything I tried, but I would agree that the apple cake was my favorite as well. After 13 days in Italy, we needed to do laundry and had quite a bit of clothes to wash. Again, the receptionist helped us book a laundry service. It was about 20 euros and it was completed in a few hours. About the location: Thymus is centraly located within walking distance to many restaurants and attractions. One perk about the location is that it's only a few short steps uphill once you were in the Sassi. We took the shuttle from Bari aiport, and it dropped us off at Piazza Matteotte. We decided to walk to our hotel, which was about a 15-minute walk with two suitcases. The part that was rough was going down the steps to go into the Sassi. But it was manageable. After that, it was mostly flat or with few steps. You can book a taxi if you would rather not deal with taking your luggage in, not a very smooth pavement. We loved our stay so much that we would love to come back, maybe during our 2 year anniversary :).

We had never been to Matera and only booked a stay because we needed to bridge 2 days until our flight back home. However, Matera is definitely worth a trip - and Thymus Residence is the perfect base for exploring the city. Reasons to go: Location: Right in the heart of Matera, in the "Sassi" area Rooms: We had a beautiful room, including a private pool and Turkish bath in the basement. Beautiful! We can definitely recommend to book that room type. Breakfast: We had breakfast in front of the Residence every morning. The buffet was small but very tasty. Staff: The staff was very friendly and helped us with dinner reservations and other recommendations. Reasons not to go: We feels this was the perfect place to visit Matera for a few days.

We had a lovely stay at Thymus Residence in the historical center of Matera with a very godd breakfast on the terrasse of the Residence with local specialties. The Residence is surrounded by good restaurants and little local, handcrafting shops.

The old town area of Matera is extraordinary, and well worth a visit. Thymus Residence is in a great place for exploring the old town and close to several decent restaurants etc. It does not actually front onto a road so it is necessary to carry cases up several stone steps and a rough little square to reach it. We had a superior cave room which was a lot of fun. And, I might add, a great deal better than the cave room we once had in Oia on Santorini! The bathroom - shower room actually - was large and the shower was good. The only real problem with the room was a lack of stowage - a common problem in hotels these days, I fear. Our room was big enough to feature a full sized carpenter's bench along one wall but frankly we would have preferred a chest of drawers! The staff were all charming and the lady running the place gave us two good recommendations for restaurants. The breakfast was surprisingly good given the number of rooms and the size of the hotel. Thoroughly recommended for the couple of nights which you will need to explore Matera.
