Thongbay Guesthouse

We loved our stay at Thongbay and found this was our best accomodation our whole trip! The family run business look after their guest amazingly. We had our breakfast delivered each day on our gorgeous balcony looking towards the river, Mr Thy booked us a trip to the water falls (which was amazing) they even did our washing several times. The pool is super refreshing at the heat of the day, able to get Beer Loas anytime at reasonable prices and we even eat off the menu which was great too. I would recommend this to anyone staying in Luang Prabang, it’s a little out of the main area, however they do have regular shuttles to town and even make do of the free bicycles they have which is easy to get around.

Everything about our stay at Thongbay was great. We were picked up at the airport and greeted with a smile, dropped off at entrance and explained about our stay and how everything worked, and proceeded to our guesthouse with river view. The staff was very friendly and we loved the breakfast delivered to our balcony every morning. About 20-25 minute walk to town, but was nice to see the surrounding area on the way to town. There are also certain drop off and pick up times available and was very helpful at times. Ate lunch and dinner here as well and loved the food and the tall Beerlao beers. Really quiet and peaceful and yes we did hear the music only 1 of the 4 mornings we stayed here and it really wasn’t bad. I did read another review and someone complained about the roosters. Good luck staying anywhere in Laos where you don’t hear roosters. We were shuttled to the airport later to find out our flight was delayed by 5 hours and they told us to come back and hang out, ate lunch, had WiFi, and then took us back again to the airport for a small fee. Overall great stay. Would not change a thing, and we almost booked a fancier place in town and we are so glad we didn’t. If you’re on the fence about staying here DO IT.

We had a fabulous stay at Thongbay - a wonderful base to explore Luang Prabang and a haven to which we were always happy to return. Friendly, fun and approachable staff, spacious comfortable room and a lush pretty setting. What more could you ask for? Thank you.

We really liked our stay at Thongbay Guesthouse which offers great value for money. The bungalows are nicely arranged in a beautiful, lush tropical garden and have everything you need. Breakfast is served on your own private balcony and guests can also have dinner, which is very decent. The staff and management are impeccably nice and helpful with every question their guest might have. The only downturn we experienced was the temple festival and a wedding nearby with extremely loud music / prayers / Chorals and or karaoke. That has cost us 2 nights of proper rest. Make sure to bring earplugs! Anyway: we fully recommend the place !

This is a fabulous place! The bungalows are nicely decorated and have a clear Lao touch. You experience that you are in Laos. Everything is really clean and well kept. The personnel is very service minded and you really feel welcome. The garden is so beautiful and the pool area is a little oasis. We had a bungalow facing the river and we had the breakfast on the veranda with a beautiful view over the river Nam Khan.

Thongbay is a very beautiful and cosy place in Luang Prabang. We enjoyed everything about it; the view from our terrasse, the garden, getting breakfast served on your own balcony and most of all the smiling service from everybody at the guest house. Please notice, that Thongbay is outside Luang Prabang city center. They do have shuttle service and it's easy to go back and forth, but if you prefer the convenience of staying in the center of town, You have to choose otherwise. Only one little downside; the beds were too hard for our taste. We didn't sleep that well.

This is a good hotel, set in beautiful shrubbery, with bungalows overlooking the Namkhan River. When it was quiet, this was very peaceful, watching the river flow, pure bliss. The problem is, there’s someone across the River, 150-200m away, who is constantly blaring music, with pulsating drums. For me, this was hugely unpleasant. For others, this might not be a big deal. Breakfast is a choice of 4 options, delivered to your room. The hotel is a 10 minute drive from the city center, and they offer 6 shuttles each day to the city, 4 shuttles back to the hotel, in the evening. They also offer complimentary shuttle service to the airport - 5 minute drive. They offer unlimited, pure water, which is great. I walked to /from the city each day. Exit left from the hotel. Then, take right turns at the next 4 options. After the 4th right, you walk 5 minutes and will see the Namkhan River, directly on the right. Then, take the first left and you will be in the middle of town. It took me 28 minutes but I am a slow walker, and use flip flops. Most people might do it in 20 minutes. It’s 1.1 mile ( 1.8 kms ). There is no hot water from the bathroom tap. The hotel charges 3% surcharge if one pays with credit card. Overall, if you are not noise sensitive as I am, you will find this property a good choice.

Everything was perfect! It started with a lift from the airport, continued with wonderful dinner and breakfasts on my private balcony and a very comfortable bed, and finished with warmth and friendliness from the staff. Kai especially was so friendly, warm and welcoming. I have no hesitation in recommending this guest house.
