Hootananny Hostel

Absolutely the loveliest and cleanest hostel I have ever stayed at. From the building, the art, the vibe, the people. Incredible. I was very unsure after reading some bad (and quite frankly unfair) reviews before my stay but if you stay anywhere in Brixton make it this place. There are small lockers for valuables located inside the corridors but we had a 6 bed all female dorm and it was absolutely fine. Lovely fellow female travellers, and fresh clean bedding. Comfortable mattresses and clean towels provided. The whole place is CLEAN. All these reviews saying the hostel is dirty are not true. It's the cleanest hostel I've ever stayed in. Anyone who thinks Hootananny is dirty has clearly never set foot in an old building before. Large communal area with a balcony overlooking the bar area. The bar itself it's beautiful, really funky artwork, and lovely atmosphere. Communal kitchen with bread and cereal provided for breakfast, and tea and coffee available to make 24/7. Met some lovely people staying and chatted around the kitchen table after our night out, and in the morning. Felt safe, warm and comfortable throughout my stay. Would happily stay for a week at a time. We'll be back for sure, thanks guys!

Absolutely disgusting. From my experience to the staff to the state of the shower room and toilets and kitchen... just dirty and disgusting. I waited over 1 hour to be checked in, then got locked in the stairwell looking for staff to help me - when I eventually found someone after knocking repeatedly on the bar door - they were rude. My ladder to my bed was straight up steel - no foot support so very painful. It is as loud as ever when trying to sleep (even with ear plugs). I really do not recommend. I'm not sure how or why the hostel is still running. If you're okay with bottom of the barrel and can manage it for a day, it might be for you. The images I've added are from a video I took on one of my days there. This was the usual state of the shower room. There is also no sink to wash hands for men using the toilets connected to the female shower room. Disgusting and disgusting again.

Awful! The window on my bedroom didn't close all the way. it's november. it's cold and the music is always loud outside. that kitchen is disgusting and they said it would be "cereal and bread for breakfast" but i only saw bread once. Needed help and the reception was close for understaff.

Great atmosphere and excellent value for money. The place is so lively on Friday nights! I want to thank the staff, who made this place special. Shoutout to Evelin the receptionist, she was super friendly and helpful. Also big shoutout to Zippa :)

Rude staff, rude customers, disgraceful place. One of the worst experiences I’ve had in London for a long time to end abruptly what was a very pleasant time up until then. Will not be setting foot in there ever again after the treatment me and my partner received

My stay at Hootenanny was perfect. Very convenient and a very good price. However, I lost my glasses during my stay and was later told they were found. But they somehow managed to lose them- not happy

Stayed here for a couple of nights with some friends - very welcoming, brilliant facilities in the hostel and obviously you’re in and about one of the best venues in London. Martin was a great help and host.

Went there with my girlfriend, spent couple of nights, amazing place, amazing music venue and hostel. Brixton is the most vibrating area in London if you ask me, and Hootananny the most vibrant hostel and club

The hootenanny does not allow you to book, so we joined a long, unsocially distanced or organised queue to enter. After waiting for over an hour, we had made it nearly to the front. The group in front of us was let in, only to be kicked out immediately with no reasoning from the staff. Despite being at the front of the queue, we were told by staff that it would take us a further two hours to be given a table. At this point we had to leave and find another venue after waiting an hour and a half to be told we wouldn’t get let in. Absolutely ruined our night and will never come back to be honest.
