An excellent dinner in this gem of a place in Hay. Food was delicious, there was superb jazz music, staff were friendly and we really enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately though the trout main course was not available which means we will have to make a return trip!

Wonderful team and the food is first class Great service and everyone was so friendly, really welcoming and everything is exceptionally clean. Will definitely be back. Strongly recommend the Black Lion Ale

Stayed for 1 night but the staff couldn't be more attentive. They fit us in for sunday roast, happy to help where they could and were all just so down to earth and welcoming. A stones throw from the border and short walk from the town square. Great Pub feel and supports local breweries. Really great place!

Very comfy room situated conveniently opposite the main building. Very friendly staff and breakfast very good...poached eggs excellent. Situated in a pleasant small town with market on a thursday. Recommend this very clean and classy place

What a lovely place ❤️ From the friendly, kind, sympathetic reception (horrendous journey up from Truro! ) to the FANTASTIC FOOD (Arancini balls to die for ❤️) to the wonderful jazz night, if your a jazz fan the relaxed atmosphere, and friendliness of the band with the diners was fab! Will be back at some point in the future.

I was greeted at the Black Lion by the lovely and welcoming owner. The pub downstairs is fantastic, very olde worlde. My colleagues and I ate here and I must say whilst the menu is slightly limited, the food is of exceptional quality. While some may think the price point of the menu is a little on the expensive side, the quality certainly justifies the price. I do however, need to address the room which I was meant to be staying in. I believe this was number 5 upstairs, but I can’t remember exactly. The room was a single room with a separate bathroom. After enjoying dinner, I had a chance to get up to the room and relax. My colleague had booked the room for me, so I was unaware I was to stay in a room with a separate bathroom before arrival. Whilst due to the age of the property this separate bathroom is understandable, this wouldn’t be something I would book myself. I’m stating this to just be mindful if booking a single room on a booking website. The room itself was extremely small, being only a single room. Whilst the room was reasonably clean, there were cobwebs on the light in the ceiling. The bed was relatively hard although I’m conscious this is subjective. The furniture in the room whilst presentable, seemed a little dated and could be of better quality to reflect the fantastic ambience of the old building downstairs. To add to this disappointment, the curtains were stained, disgusting and should be thrown away. They were in tatters. I have included images in the review to support this. To further elaborate on my stay, I have also included pictures of the inside of the kettle. This was grim, brown stained and had seen better days. The kettle was an inexpensive plastic one. This should also be replaced. Whilst functional, this was not clean. For the price point of the room, I expected better. Can the pub change the fact the room has a separate bathroom? No, it’s an old building. Can the pub change some curtains, a kettle, add a new mattress topper for comfort? Certainly for the money charged. Again, would I come back for food? Certainly. My colleagues stayed in the rooms in an exterior building, which were clearly renovated and said were of good quality. I am aware that I could have expressed my thoughts upon deciding to check out early, but didn’t feel this was appropriate to point out the poor condition in front of other patrons downstairs at the bar. If these simple things are addressed, it would be a brilliant stay for someone. The pub is in a superb location, offering brilliant food by welcoming, attentive and friendly staff. I decided to check out before the first night. The reason being the hard mattress / separate bathroom and unpleasant overall condition of the room (curtains / kettle.) This may seem trivial to some, you don’t sleep on curtains and the kettle worked.. However it didn’t give confidence of a good nights stay. I hope my review is found to be constructive and insightful for both future guest

The main building is separate from your rooms which feels like you have your own apartment! So, for privacy, this is great. The rooms are well presented and stayed in the twinroom, so two single beds are very neat, tidy, and clean. The best thing is that when you walked in it felt like your own little cottage so very charming, cosy wonderful. Complimentary teas, coffees, biscuits, there's a kettle, hairdryer, and TV with all channels to movie channels. Wardrobe and hangers, you can actually take off, not stuck in the wardrobe! Great simple things. The bathroom was a massive plus as you could have the option of a bath or a shower! And towel and hand towels provided. Complimentary shampoos,conditioner, soaps also. Writing desk lamp, extra drawers, and bedside cabinet. There are no usb plugs, so bring a plug for mobile charger. But there is an electrical shop literally few steps from the inn. WiFi connection is excellent from the main building. It is very easy to access NO annoying passwords great plus. Car parking was great, and after checking out, the owners said we were allowed to park there all day free of charge so we could spend the whole day sightseeing and looking at the shops. The main building is full of original features, stone fireplaces and hearths open fires, low ceilings, wooden beams, original sash windows, cwtch in every corner. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming but very, very professional and respectful. And you can see they take individual pride in their overall customer service. My compliments to their chef, outstanding. The food at this establishment shines above everything. This is their crowing glory as they serve and present excellent dishes catered for all. As a gluten- free vegan, I'm always apprehensive, but this was not necessary here. Obviously, I would highly recommend 5*

We booked a table online for the restaurant but recieved no correspondence telling us that they were already fully booked. This meant that we couldn’t book a table anywhere else. On top of this, the person who we spoke to on the phone was boarderline rude to us when we explained the situation. Very unimpressed with the customer service we have recieved.

We were happy with the quality of all the facilities and amenities. The room was quiet and the bathroom very modernly appointed! Dinner was delicious and it’s clear the owner takes great care and pride in this establishment. In a perfect world, the breakfast would have been included in the room rate as it wasn’t very cheap. However, the quality of the ingredients was very high and it was beautifully served! We’d love to return.
