It is tough for me to give this rating to AfroChic because like the other Elewana locations, the staff here was incredible. The issue with AfroChic is that it is located in a really rough area, basically surrounded by slums with tons of homeless people. Diani Beach is certainly not a place you would want to walk around and explore. The hotel is clean but very small, old and tired. The biggest problem with our stay was undoubtedly the “beach boys” which the hotel warns you about when checking in. The beach boys are essentially homeless people who try and sell you stuff on the beach. If you step off the hotel property line, they immediately get up from up and down the shoreline and start walking towards you. They are relentless and will stand in your way trying to get back to the hotel. If you are laying on a daybed, they will stand 20 feet away from you and stare at you until you acknowledge them. We saw a couple walk towards the water and within minutes they were surrounded by a crowd of 12 beach boys (not exaggerating, they wait for you to walk off the hotel premises). In our entire 3 day stay, we did not see one guest go in the ocean from AfroChic or any of other nearby properties. You cannot lay out on the beach without being disturbed. Overall, Elewana is fantastic but Diani is not a place I would recommend anyone go to. If we could do it again, we would have spent more time on safari or just went home and went to US beaches.
