Our experience was pretty dreadful... The first difficulty was actually locating the venue, it is to be found after driving up a very narrow track which became increasingly narrow as we proceeded culminating with the hedges encroaching onto the drive. The road surface is very poor and got progressively worse towards the accommodation with substantial potholes! Upon arrival, the first view was a derelict car on the right hand side of the yard and a brick gateway leading to what was once a stable yard. The yard had once been concreted, and over the years, the concrete has fragmentated and there are huge weeds growing up through the cracks. The initial impression was that the whole complex (for want of a better word) was neglected and in very poor condition - the impression proved accurate. The room was originally a stable, and there were still quite a few of the old disused stables adjoining the room, everything was dirty and untidy. The steps to the room were covered with an extremely dilapidated old carpet. The door was somewhat difficult to open and had an internal quality two lever sashlock, old and insecure. The room was extremely cluttered, but appeared to be clean and the bed was found to be comfortable... The shower was surprisingly efficient with new tiling and was spacious. There were no toiletries of any description and a small wall cupboard was full of empty toilet roll tubes. There was another door in the back wall which gave access to a raised timber patio, all the timber forming this patio was really in need of some upkeep being extremely grotty, there were two recliners on this landing which had the appearance of having been there for about twenty years, although there were two old sheets in the room with a note explaining they were to be used to cover the recliners in the event that some one "might" wish to sunbathe. The rear door also employed a two lever lock. There was no TV or radio etc. and the room was somewhat cramped. The congenial host asked us the time we would want breakfast and instructed us to enter her kitchen at the allotted time from the front of the building The kitchen was really untidy and very cluttered with a small round table with two chairs squeezed into the small space available. The breakfast, which we understood to be a culinary experience turned out to be dreadful, the fried egg was almost raw, the bacon was, literally, half a small rasher of streaky bacon, mainly fat and completely inedible, fortunately there was a large cat lurking in the undergrowth surrounding the kitchen and it appeared to savour the bacon a lot more than we did, the sausage was also gratefully received by the moggie and, in fairness, it did not appear to suffer any ill effects during the time we were present. I should, in the spirit of fairness, record that the fried sliced potatoes were very tasty. There was toast but no marmalade! The much vaunted view, visible from the kitchen, was beautiful although the large field adjoining the
